Course overview

Traffic engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses engineering techniques to achieve the safe and efficient movement of people and goods on roadways.

Typical traffic engineering projects involve designing traffic control device installations and modifications, including traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings. Examples of Engineering Plans include pole engineering analysis and Storm Water Prevention Programs. However, traffic engineers also consider traffic safety by investigating locations with high crash rates and developing countermeasures to reduce crashes.

Frequently asked question

What is Traffic Engineering?
‘Traffic Engineering is the branch of engineering which deals with the improvement of the traffic performance of road networks and terminals.’ Improvement of the traffic performance requires to perform systematic traffic studies, analysis and then its engineering application.
Mental Characteristics
Knowledge, skill, intelligence, experience and literacy can affect the road user characteristics. Knowledge of vehicle characteristics, traffic behaviour, driving practice, rules of roads and psychology of road users will be quite useful for safe traffic operations.
Psychological Characteristics
These effect reaction, to traffic situations, of road users to a great extent. Attentiveness, anger, fear, anxiety, phobias, superstition, and impatience may affect the traffic performance to great extent.
